Class Schedule for Singers

Stage Movement for Classical Singers

Today’s classical singers are being asked more and more often to move expressively in opera productions that employ the new, natural or stylized approaches to direction.  However, most opera training does not include the level of movement expertise that is increasingly called for on stage.

Dance artist/educator Sara Draper is prepared to fill that gap.  Her Stage Movement for Classical Singers class draws from classical and modern dance traditions, as well as Laban Movement Analysis, yoga, Feldenkrais (Awareness Through Movement), Pilates, Bartenieff Fundamentals, guided improvisation and other techniques as needed.  Special attention is given to learning movement sequences easily, mastering movement qualities, and breathing.

The goal is for the singer to become comfortable, familiar, and suitably skilled with his or her body as an instrument of expression for stage work to support the wonderfully expressive classically trained voice.  The result should be confidence with any style of opera direction and greater career versatility and opportunity.

“Working with Sara Draper was so easy; her history of interdisciplinary collaborations made it easy for her to use the musical knowledge in my background and develop it in dance.  She gave me a vocabulary for so many different kinds of movement and helped me to get each one into my body.  Suddenly, if I wanted to convey something physically, I had choices.  Tons of them.  She gave me enough of a foundation, and enough confidence, and enough love for movement that in just a few weeks, it  became another tool in my artist’s bag.    Training my body like this just makes me feel like I’m in better coordination with my music, and like a more complete interpreter.  Her teaching was invaluable to me, and I’m happy to bring it forward with me in my work.”

“Dear Ms. Draper,

…Thank you so much for the time you devoted to helping me overcome my two left feet in your class! There was an attention to detail and discipline there that gave me a template from what I’ve been able to tackle other movement challenges since, and although I doubt I’ll be receiving a call from the LA Ballet any time soon, for my own sake, it is a blessing to feel more confident than I did three years ago, having received the exposure I did to many of these concepts through your teaching. :)

I hope that you’re doing well Ms. Draper, thank you again so much! :)

Sincerely and respectfully,
